Spices in small bowls.

Pumpkin pie spice is a warm blend of spices commonly used in pumpkin pie and various other fall themed baking recipes, including hot drinks like Pumpkin Spice Lattes.

I like to use my homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe in my Pumpkin Pie Overnight Oats and my Pumpkin Scones. It’s also perfect for that Thanksgiving pumpkin pie. You can also try using this mix in my autumn spice cookies.

Canadian Thanksgiving is in October, so to me October is pumpkin month but really, what’s wrong with pumpkin pie spiced baking at any time of the year, right?

Why Make Homemade Spice Mixes?

So why would you make homemade spice mixes when it’s so easy to just buy it from the store, ready made?

Because:

  • it’s more economical in the long run – spices have a lost cost when you buy them in larger quantities. Specific blends are more costly.
  • flavors are better/fresher
  • you can control which flavors you like – ditch the cloves if you want to
  • no additives
  • it’s fun to make things from scratch
  • you can give them as gifts – fun for the holidays!
