Give your next margarita a tropical twist with this easy pineapple coconut margarita recipe. The combination of sweet pineapple juice, coconut water, zesty lime juice, and tequila is perfect for hot summer days by the pool.

This tropical spin on the traditional margarita features piña colada flavors with a tangy Tajin rim.
Make it glass by glass using a cocktail shaker or make a large pitcher for summer BBQs. Pair this tropical cocktail with grilled corn and spicy jalapeno cheddar burgers for a flavorful summer afternoon.
Unlike the classic cocktail, I don't add an orange liqueur like Triple Sec, because I want the flavors of just the pineapple and coconut.
Feel free to add orange liqueur or a splash of orange juice.
Ingredients
See the recipe card for exact amounts.
- tequila: I use reposado Tequila (aged in oak barrels). For a milder tequila, use blanco tequila, also called silver tequila.
- pineapple juice: I use pineapple juice from a carton but I bet fresh pineapple juice would level this cocktail up even more.
- coconut water: I use canned coconut water but you could also use coconut water from a carton. I prefer coconut water over coconut milk but I've seen drinks that use that coconut milk instead for a creamier result.
- lime juice: I prefer fresh lime juice for this cocktail, but I'm sure bottled juice would be good.
- sweetener: this is optional and you can go for simple syrup or agave nectar (agave syrup) if needed. You could also spice it up with jalapeno simple syrup. This helps for rimming the glass if you're not using fresh limes.
- garnish: I like a simple salt-rimmed glass for margaritas and for this drink, I use Tajin - a chili and lime salt. Tajin is especially good with fruit like pineapple. If you don't have it try a mix of chili powder, lime zest, and coarse salt like kosher salt. Or try a toasted coconut rim instead.
Note: I ran out of limes when recording the video for this recipe, so I used lemon, which works, but I prefer the lime juice.
No cocktail shaker? Reuse a jar with a lid.

Prep Tips
This is one of the easiest drinks to make and uses pretty simple ingredients. Use a jar with a lid instead of a cocktail shaker, or just make the drink by pouring everything over ice into a glass. No fuss!
First, rim the glass.
- Rub the edge of the glass with liquid sweetener or lime juice.
Pour the Tajin on a small plate and stamp the rim of the glass on the plate, coating it in the Tajin. This adds great flavor while sipping.
Add ice to the prepared glass and set it aside while you mix the cocktail.
- Add ice to the cocktail shaker and pour in the pineapple juice.
- Add the tequila.
- Finally, add the lime juice and coconut water. Shake for about 60 seconds.
- Pour the liquid over into the glass. Taste for sweetness and add liquid sweetener if needed.
Serve. Garnish with a ledge wedge or pineapple slice for a pretty presentation.
To make the drink without a shaker
- Rim the glass and add ice. Pour in the rest of the ingredients.
- Stir. Taste for sweetness and add liquid sweetener if needed.
Tips for making pineapple coconut margaritas
- Party size it for your summer happy hours by multiplying each ingredient by 8 and storing it in a pitcher (except the ice). Rim each glass and add ice, then pour over the cocktail mix and garnish with a lime wedge or pineapple slice.
- For maximum coconut flavor, try coconut tequila instead.
- Add triple sec for a more traditional take on a margarita.
- Use coconut milk instead of coconut water for a creamier result.
What to serve with margaritas
This is one of my favorite cocktails for summer with its easy tropical vibe. For a simple afternoon get-together, I like to put out tortilla chips, guacamole, pico de gallo, and pineapple mango salsa for snacking.

Storage
Make each drink as needed.
To make a pitcher beforehand, combine only the pineapple juice, coconut water, lime juice, and tequila in a large pitcher in the fridge. Before serving, stir the cocktail mixture again, rim glasses, add ice, and add the cocktail mix and serve.
