While the traditional margarita is always a favorite, experimenting with different flavors can bring a fun new twist to this beloved drink.
What is a Margarita?
A margarita is a classic cocktail that originated in Mexico, known for its refreshing and tangy flavor. A traditional margarita it is a blend of tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and a sweetener like agave nectar.
A margarita can be served either on the rocks or blended with ice and is often garnished with a salt-rimmed glass, which complements its zesty and slightly sweet profile.
What are the ingredients for a Classic Margarita?
I make a classic margarita in a 2:1:1 ratio of tequila to triple sec to lime juice.
Sweetener is optional and added to taste. The triple sec can be omitted for a more budget friendly cocktail. Add a splash of orange juice to keep the orange flavor without adding the liqueur.
- 2 oz tequila
- 1 oz triple sec
- 1 oz lime juice
- sweetener
- ice
- salt rim
- lime wedge, for garnish
Although tequila is typical to margaritas, I also make vodka margaritas.
To rim a glass for a margarita, gently rub a lime wedge around the rim. Pour a small amount of salt on to a plate and roll the rim of the glass in the salt, rotating it for an even coating. Tap the glass to remove any excess salt and fill it with your cocktail.

Tips for making margaritas
- Use fresh lime juice for a brighter more vibrant flavor.
- Rim the glass to make the margarita look a little fancier (it's super easy!) and add to the flavor. I use kosher salt or Tajin in my margarita recipes. Tajin is a chili and lime salt and it's a great contrasting flavor to sweet fruit.
- Use fun garnishes for a pretty presentation. You can try lime wedges or lime wheels, or jalapeño slices.
- Frozen fruit works best in margaritas for the most fruit flavor and a thick slushie consistency. Use less ice and more frozen fruit for even more flavor.
- Party size it for your summer happy hours by multiplying the recipe! Rim each glass and then pour over the cocktail mix and garnish with a lime wedge.
- Add triple sec to any of the above margaritas for a more traditional take on a margarita.
