Homemade Cashew Butter is a simple and delicious alternative to the store-bought version. This quick and easy homemade spread is made with just cashews and is great on toast, stirred into oatmeal or by the spoon for a snack.

Homemade cashew butter is one of my favorite nut butters. I make peanut butter and almond butter too, but cashews are probably my favorite nut.

Making homemade nut butter is really easy too if you have the right equipment:

  • a food processor or
  • a high powered blender

Just process or blend the cashews until you have a creamy butter. It can take about 10-15 minutes so I recommend giving your appliance a break every few minutes and scraping down the sides if it’s a bit older.

I use the Ninja Home System and prefer to use the blender jar over the food processor to make cashew butter.

Ingredients

See the recipe card for exact amounts.

  • cashews: you can use raw or toasted cashews for cashew butter. Toasted cashews will have a richer, nuttier flavor and blend easier.
  • optional add-ins: try adding maple syrup or cinnamon for a flavored cashew butter

To roast cashews at home, spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet and roast for 10-12 minutes at 325°F (165°C).

Instructions

  1. Add the cashews to the bowl of a food processor or the blender jar.
  2. Blend for about 10 minutes. It’ll go through several stages, starting at a light and fluffy meal, then a chunky ball, a thick paste and finally a thin butter.
  3. Stop the appliance every few minutes and scrape the sides with a spatula to reincorporate the cashews that have slid up the side of the bowl.
  4. Continue the process until you achieve a smooth creamy butter.

Tips for making cashew butter

  • Use a strong food processor or blender. An older appliance might struggle a bit when making nut butter. This means it will take longer so don’t give up!
  • Use a high powered blender if you have it. The smaller jar and more blades means the blending process will be quicker.

Storage

Homemade cashew butter should be stored in the fridge to keep it fresh. Store it in an airtight container like a jar with a lid for about two weeks. Let it come to room temperature before using for easier spreading.
