I take toast pretty seriously and eat toast pretty much every late morning or early afternoon for breakfast. My avocado toast with feta has been my obsession for years. But once I started trying new toast toppings, and writing a toast eBook, I fell for cottage cheese toast.
Cottage cheese is a high protein cheese and gives you a blank canvas for your favorite toppings. There are so many different ways to top cottage cheese toast, from savory toasts to sweet toasts.
In this blog post, I share my three favorite savory toppings as well as a sweet cottage cheese toast idea with fresh figs.
My grocery store carries this cottage cheese which contains 17 grams of protein per half cup of cottage cheese.
This toast recipe is a great way to get more protein while still being an easy breakfast or afternoon snack to make any day of the week. All you need to do is toast bread and add a few toppings.
Protein is essential for muscle and bone strength, immune support, and cellular function.

Cottage cheese toast base recipe
- bread: I like a thick sourdough slice for this recipe. Use your favorite!
- cottage cheese: I use full-fat high protein cottage cheese.
- salt and pepper: a pinch of salt and black pepper to season.
See all of the topping ideas and more about the ingredients below in the instructions section. Learn about ingredients substitutions next.
Substitutions
- bread: use the bread you prefer. I like a thick slice of sourdough bread, toasted extra crispy so that it holds up to the cottage cheese and toppings and doesn't get soggy.
- cottage cheese: try low-fat cottage cheese if it suits your lifestyle better.
- toppings: there are so many variations on toppings you can try on top of cottage cheese toast. Try other fresh fruit, fruit jams, and other fresh produce like chopped bell peppers.
How to make basic cottage cheese toast
The base recipe makes one large piece of toast because the sourdough bread I buy is a large loaf. Use two slices of regular sized bread.
- Toast the bread.
- Spread a ½ cup of cottage cheese on the toast.
- Add salt and pepper.
Eat it like this or try one of the topping options below.
TIP: If you're not a big fan of the curd texture of cottage cheese, try whipping it in a small food processor to achieve a smooth spread similar to cream cheese. You can use whipped cottage cheese in place of the traditional cottage cheese in any of these recipes.
Avocado Cottage Cheese Toast
Everyone's favorite toast topping paired with cottage cheese for a great weekend brunch option.
- avocado: I like the avocado sliced, but you can mash it with a fork if you prefer.
- lime juice: to flavor the avocado.
- seeds: for more nutrition and a crunch texture.
- hot sauce: for a kick of heat. Skip it if you're not a fan.
- cilantro: for freshness. If you're not a fan, try parsley or green onions instead.
- Make the base recipe.
- Lay the avocado slices on top of the cottage cheese.
- Squeeze fresh lime juice over and season with more salt and pepper.
- Add a few dashes of hot sauce, sprinkle the seeds and fresh herbs on top and serve.
Tomato Oregano Cottage Cheese Toast
Savory, sweet, and tangy this toast doubles up as a great appetizer idea.
- tomato: I like Roma tomatoes but you can also halve cherry tomatoes or use another tomato variety that you like.
- balsamic glaze: adds a sweet and tangy taste
- fresh oregano: I grow oregano and sprinkle it on everything in the summer. Tomatoes and oregano are best friends!
- red pepper flakes: for a bit of spice.
- Make the base recipe.
- Slice the tomato and dab it with a paper towel. Season with salt and pepper.
- Add the tomato slices to the toast and drizzle with balsamic glaze.
- Sprinkle fresh oregano and red pepper flakes on and serve.
Cucumber Dill Cottage Cheese Toast
These toppings are fresh and crispy - perfect for lazy summer mornings.
- cucumbers: I use English cucumbers, sliced. Cucumbers have a mild flavor and go well with fresh dill and lemon.
- fresh dill: goes well with cucumber and brings a fresh herby flavor to this toast.
- lemon zest: goes well with cucumber and dill and adds a fresh bright flavor.
- Make the base recipe.
- Add the cucumber slices on top of the cottage cheese.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- Sprinkle the fresh dill on top.
- Grate lemon zest on top and serve.
Fig and Honey Cottage Cheese Toast
This is the only sweet toast of the bunch and feels like dessert for breakfast.
- fresh figs: figs bring a fresh, sweet, and fruity taste to this toast. Try fresh strawberries or fig jam when figs are out of season.
- honey: a drizzle of honey for sweetness. Try a drizzle of maple syrup instead.
- pecans: brings crunch
- rosemary: a savory contrast to the fig and honey
- Make the base recipe.
- Slice the fig and add the slices on top of the cottage cheese.
- Drizzle honey on top.
- Scatter the fresh rosemary and pecans on top and serve.

What to serve with cottage cheese toast
Any of these toast ideas can be served by themselves but would also be perfect as part of a lunch spread including fresh fruit or scrambled eggs.
Try avocado toast with feta cheese next.
Storage
This toast recipe is best eaten right when its made as the cottage cheese can make the toast soggy after some time.
Individual toppings can be prepped and store in the fridge, such as cucumber slices etc.
FAQs
You can prep toppings ingredients ahead of time and store them seperately in the fridfge until ready to eat. Then just toast the bread and assemble. It's best not to assemble ahead of time as cottage cheese can make the toast soft.
