This made-from-scratch dip uses simple ingredients and offers a good amount of protein per serving, especially if you use a high-protein Greek yogurt.

The method is beginner-friendly with step-by-step instructions for cooking the onions. You can also leave the onions out for an easier 5-minute dip!

Cottage cheese offers a thick and creamy base once blended. Greek yogurt adds even more creaminess and a bit of tang.

This cottage cheese dip holds up well in the fridge, which makes it perfect for prepping ahead for snacks or gatherings. It’s also a great way to use up cottage cheese if you’re not into eating it plain.

Ingredients

Ingredients for a recipe labeled onion powder, garlic powder, dried chives, dried parsley, salt & pepper, Greek yogurt, onions, and cottage cheese.
  • Cottage cheese: This is the base of the dip, and once blended, it turns thick and smooth. Offers protein!
  • Greek yogurt: Makes the dip creamier and gives a little tang.
  • Onions: Diced and browned until golden to add a slightly sweet, savory bite and a ton of flavor.
  • Onion powder: Ups the punch of onion.
  • Garlic powder: Adds depth.
  • Dried chives: Mild onion flavor with a herby edge.
  • Dried parsley: Adds an earthy flavor to help round out the dip. These four ingredients lend a kind of ranch-inspired flavor.
  • Salt: To balance and enhance, don’t skip it. Better yet, taste the dip without and then with salt to really see the difference!

Substitutions

  • Greek yogurt: Try sour cream for a richer, tangier taste.
  • Onions: Try shallots or leeks for something similar.
  • Dried herbs: Fresh herbs can be used instead of dried. Triple the amount if you’re swapping in fresh parsley or chives.

Prep Tips

  • Cook the onions in a skillet on the stovetop. If you skip them, this is a no-cook recipe!
  • Dice the onions.

This cottage cheese dip is simple to make. Start by cooking the onions, then blend the dip, and stir everything together.

Transfer to a bowl, garnish with green onions or parsley if you want, and serve.

Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the onions. I like to do this dry for the first 5 minutes. Let them sit and cook.

After 5 minutes, stir and you should see the onions have brown edges now. Add a touch of oil and sprinkle with kosher salt.

Add a splash of water every 3-5 minutes and then stir. This will help bring up the brown bits from the pan and cook the onions evenly while gently softening them. Continue this process until you reach the consistency you like.

After about 15 minutes, the onions will be lightly browned.

I like to keep going. After 30-35 minutes, the onions will be deeply golden. They’ll still have a bit of bite at this point, which I like for this dip.

You can keep going for a total of 45-60 minutes for a more jammy consistency, if you prefer a softer dip.

          Let the onions cool slightly.

Add the cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, onion powder, garlic powder, dried chives, dried parsley, salt, and a few cracks of black pepper to a blender or food processor.

Blend until smooth, about 30 seconds. Scrape down the sides and blend again for another 15 seconds to make sure everything is combined.

This dip is good with everything from crackers and chips to bread. I made Uzbek bread boules and used torn bits to scoop this up! Delish.

Tips for making Cottage Cheese Dip

                  • Brown the onions properly: Don’t rush this step. Take the full 30 to 40 minutes to get them golden. This adds the sweet, rich flavor that makes the dip so good.
                  • Blend until smooth: If your blender struggles, stop and scrape the sides a few times. A high-powered blender works best.
                  • Cool the onions before mixing: Stirring hot onions into the dip can make it watery and affect the texture.
                  • Taste and adjust seasoning: After blending, give it a taste. Depending on your cottage cheese and yogurt, you might want to add more salt or pepper.

What to serve with Cottage Cheese Dip

Serve this cottage cheese dip with raw vegetables like carrots, celery, peppers, and cucumber for a fresh and crunchy snack. It’s great for prepping ahead and keeping in the fridge for healthy weekday snacking (this is what I do!).

If you’re planning a party spread, this dip pairs well with pita chips, pretzels, tortilla chips, or crackers alongside other homemade dips like whipped ricotta dip, tzatziki, or a classic caramelized onion dip.

It also works as a spread. Use it on toast or in sandwiches for a creamy layer that adds flavor and protein.

                  Storage

Transfer leftover cottage cheese dip to an airtight container and store it in the fridge. It will keep well for 4 to 5 days. Stir it before serving if it separates a bit.

I don’t recommend freezing dairy-based dips like this one, they can turn grainy and watery after thawing.

                  FAQs

Is cottage cheese good in dip?

Yes, blending cottage cheese creates a smooth, thick texture without needing cream cheese or mayo. It’s also lower in fat and higher in protein compared to sour cream or mayonnaise.

                  Equipment

                  Ingredients

                  • 1 ½ cups cottage cheese
                  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt

                  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
                  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
                  • 2 teaspoons dried chives
                  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
                  • ¼ teaspoon salt
                  • ground black pepper

                  Instructions

                  • Cook the onions. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onions and cook dry for 5 minutes without stirring. Stir, then add a bit of oil and kosher salt. • Blend until smooth, about 30 seconds or so.
                  • Scrape the sides and blend one more time, about 15 seconds.
                  • Stir the cooled onions into the cottage cheese mix.
                  • Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with fresh green onions or parsley.

                  Notes

Don’t rush caramelizing the onions. Take the full 30 to 40 minutes to get them golden. This adds the sweet, rich flavor that makes the dip so good. You can also skip the onions for a simpler dip that is still delicious and herby.
Blend until smooth: If your blender struggles, stop and scrape the sides a few times. A high-powered blender works best.
Cool the onions before mixing: Stirring hot onions into the dip can make it watery and affect the texture.
Taste and adjust seasoning: After blending, give it a taste. Depending on your cottage cheese and yogurt, you might want to add more salt or pepper.
