This Big Mac fries recipe is a fun and delicious homemade twist on the McDonald’s Big Mac Burger. Crispy fries are baked until crispy and then topped with all of the iconic ingredients of the a Big Mac - from ground beef (or plant-based beef), melty cheese, tangy pickles, crispy iceberg lettuce, juicy tomatoes, finely diced onion, to a homemade version of the famous Big Mac Sauce. This homemade Big Mac fries recipe is my new favorite loaded fries recipe and I have a lot of loaded fries recipes!

This recipe is really easy to put together which makes it even better! You'll just need to bake frozen fries and sauté some beef or plant-based beef - I prefer a plant based beef product but you could also try ground turkey or chicken I'm sure!

Once the fries and beef are cooked you'll just melt some cheese and whip up the sauce. Pile the toppings high on top of the fries and beef and cheese and dig in!

When I make these, I make a serving for myself and a serving for my daughter and I make it in the air-fryer, using the two trays that come with it.

If you're making this for a group of for a fast food at home game day snack, make it on large sheet pans!

Ingredients for big mac fries labeled fries, cheese, beef or plant ground, pickles, ketchup, mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickled, onion, and vinegar.
  • fries: I use frozen fries for this because it makes it super quick and easy. Use your favorite kind.
  • beef: I use a meatless ground similar to Beyond Beef because I prefer it but you can also use the more typical ground beef for this recipe.
  • sauce: we'll make an easy copycat Big Mac sauce with all your favorite condiments like mayo, ketchup, and mustard.
  • cheese: use your favorite cheese. I used Havarti, you could also use cheddar cheese! I always grate my own from blocks because it melts and tastes better to me, but a bag of shredded cheese is a good option to make prep even quicker!
  • toppings: to mimic a Big Mac burger, you'll top the fries with finely diced onion, pickle, lettuce, and tomato. You can even add sesame seeds if you want to!

Substitutions

  • fries: frozen fries make this recipe quick and easy but you can also make your own homemade fries or try air fryer sweet potato wedges.

Read below for step-by-step instructions on how to make Big Mac fries at home.

Meal prepping? Cook the beef, shred the cheese, make the sauce and chop the pickles, onion, tomatoes and lettuce. Store it all in the fridge and make fresh fries as needed!

Instructions

Prep Tips

  • Preheat your oven or air fryer for the fries.
  • Chop the lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and onion. Shred the cheese.

Once you have the beef and fries cooked the recipe comes together really quickly. I made individual portions below but you can make it all in the oven as a sheet pan dinner.

Plant-based beef starts to sauté in a skillet.
  1. Fry the beef or plant grounds in a skillet until cooked through. Bake the fries.

Tips for making loaded big mac fries

  • Crispy fries are key! Whether you're baking or air-frying your fries, make sure they come out crispy. Soggy fries will not hold up well under the toppings.
  • Not a fan of raw onion? Cook the onion with the beef instead of adding it as a raw topping.

What to serve with big mac fries

If you're having a copycat takeout night at home serve Big Mac fries with a Smashburger and a quick side salad.

For game day make the recipe on big sheet pans and feed large groups!

Storage

Big Mac fries are best enjoyed fresh, but you can cook the beef, shred the cheese, prep the toppings and make the sauce ahead of time. Store all of the ingredients in airtight containers in the fridge.

The sauce will last for a week or two in the fridge.

FAQs

What is big mac sauce made of?

McDonald's big mac sauce can be replicated at home with a mixture of mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, relish, vinegar, salt, and sugar. Optionally, you can add garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.
