These crispy fried avocado tacos are filled with cornmeal-crusted avocado, fresh tomato and cucumber salsa, and a creamy garlic lime sauce. Add crumbled cotija cheese, pickled red onions, and fresh cilantro for tacos with so much texture and fresh flavour. An easy vegetarian dinner ready in about 30 minutes.

I always bought fresh corn tortillas when I was in Mexico, and that’s where I learned to make them myself using nixtamalized corn. Fresh tortillas have a wonderful corn flavour and a soft texture that makes them worth seeking out. They are super soft and flexible. If you can use them, I always recommend that.
For these crispy fried avocado tacos, store-bought corn tortillas work just fine too. The trick is to warm them before filling them to soften them. Cold corn tortillas are more likely to crack when folded, especially straight from the package.
Heat the tortillas in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds per side, until they’re warm, soft, and have a few lightly toasted spots. Or wrap them in a paper towel and microwave for about 10 seconds. Keep them wrapped in a clean kitchen towel while you prepare the rest of the tacos. This helps them stay warm and flexible until you’re ready to serve.

If you’re planning a taco night, serve these tacos with my pickled red onions and garlic lime crema. Both are great toppings to keep in the fridge for other meals, too.

For the crispy avocado
- Avocado: Choose a large avocado that’s ripe but still firm. It should hold its shape when sliced and coated.
- All-purpose flour: The first layer helps the egg stick to the avocado.
- Egg: Binds the seasoned cornmeal coating to each slice.
- Fine cornmeal: Creates the crisp, golden exterior. Fine cornmeal gives a more even coating than a coarse grind.
- Garlic powder: Adds savory flavor to the breading.
- Smoked paprika: Adds smoky flavor and colour.
- Cumin: Brings a warm, earthy flavor.
- Salt and black pepper: Seasons the coating.
- Cayenne powder: Adds a little heat.
- Neutral oil: Use an oil suitable for frying, such as canola or vegetable oil.
For the Garlic Lime Crema
- Plain Greek yogurt: Gives the sauce a creamy base with a little tang.
- Mayonnaise: Adds richness and smoothness.
- Lime juice: Fresh lime juice brightens the sauce.
- Garlic: One small, finely grated clove adds a punch of savory flavor. I like to use a microplane.
For the tomato cucumber salsa
- Roma tomato: Diced tomato adds freshness and a little juiciness without making the salsa too watery.
- Persian cucumbers: These small cucumbers have thin skins and a crisp texture. Dice them into small pieces so they’re easy to add to tacos.
- Red onion: Adds a sharp, savory bite.
- Fresh cilantro: Brings a fresh, herbal flavor. If you’re not a cilantro fan, skip it or choose flat-leaf parsley instead.
- Lime juice: Adds acidity and ties the salsa together.
For serving
- Corn tortillas: Their flavor works well with the cornmeal coating. Warm them before assembling the tacos so they’re soft and flexible.
- Cotija cheese: Real cotija crumbles easily and adds a salty, savoury finish. I recommend using real cotija rather than a cotija-style cheese that may have a firmer, rubberier texture. I tried the cotija style for the first time in this recipe, and that product is not similar to real cotija, in my opinion. I had to get the real cotija out of the freezer, and that is what’s shown in the finished photos.
- Pickled red onions: Add tangy crunch and balance the richness of the avocado.
- Fresh cilantro: A little extra on top adds freshness.
- Lime wedges: Squeeze fresh lime over the finished tacos just before eating.
Tips for Making Avocado Tacos
- Choose an avocado that’s ripe but firm. An avocado that’s too soft will be difficult to coat and turn in the pan. Look for one that gives slightly when pressed but isn’t mushy.
- Set up your breading station first. Arrange the flour, beaten egg, and seasoned cornmeal in separate shallow bowls. This makes coating the avocado easier and keeps the process moving.
- Keep the oil around 350°F. If the oil is too cool, the coating can absorb excess oil instead of crisping. If it’s too hot, the outside can brown before the coating has cooked evenly.
- Fry in batches. Leave space between the avocado slices so the oil temperature doesn’t drop too much and the coating has room to crisp.
- Prepare the toppings before frying. The avocado is best served hot and crispy, so have the salsa, sauce, tortillas, and garnishes ready before you start cooking.

Instructions
Prep Tips
- Make the Garlic Lime Crema: In a small bowl, stir together the Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, lime juice, grated garlic, and salt until smooth. Set aside while you prepare the remaining ingredients.
- Prepare the tomato cucumber salsa: Dice the Roma tomato, Persian cucumbers, and red onion. Add them to a bowl with the chopped cilantro, lime juice, and a pinch of salt. Stir gently and set aside.
- Slice the avocado: Cut the avocado in half and remove the pit. Peel each half and cut it into four wedges, giving you eight slices in total.

- Set up the breading station: Place the flour in one shallow bowl and beat the egg in a second bowl. In a third bowl, combine the fine cornmeal, garlic powder, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, black pepper, and cayenne.

- Coat each avocado slice in flour, dip it in the beaten egg, then turn it in the seasoned cornmeal until coated on all sides.

- Fry the avocado: Pour about ½ inch of neutral oil into a skillet and heat over medium heat to 350°F.

- Working in batches, carefully add the coated avocado slices. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes per side, until the coating is golden and crispy. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
- Warm the tortillas: Heat the corn tortillas in a dry skillet for about 30 seconds per side, until they’re soft and have a few lightly charred spots. Keep them covered while you finish warming the remaining tortillas. You can also wrap them in a paper towel and microwave them for about 10 seconds.
- Assemble the tacos: Spread a spoonful of garlic lime crema over each tortilla. Add two crispy avocado slices, followed by the tomato cucumber salsa, crumbled cotija, pickled red onions, and fresh cilantro.
- Serve immediately with lime wedges.

Storage
These tacos are best assembled just before serving. The fried avocado coating softens as it sits, and the fresh salsa releases moisture over time.
If you have leftovers, store the fried avocado, salsa, and crema separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 or 4 days. For the best texture, reheat the avocado in an air fryer or oven until warmed through and crisp again. Avoid assembling the tacos until you’re ready to eat.
The salsa and crema can be served cold straight from the refrigerator. Warm fresh tortillas for each serving.
What to Serve With Avocado Tacos
Serve these tacos with Mexican street corn, rice, or black beans for a more substantial meal. They’re also great alongside guacamole, pico de gallo, or a bowl of tortilla chips and salsa. If you’re setting up a taco night, add pickled red onions, lime wedges, and extra Garlic Lime Crema to the table so everyone can customize their tacos.
