I’m a black Americano kinda girl when it comes to my daily coffee, but every once in a while I get a craving and an urge to play around with ingredients and come up with fun new drinks.

This drink was inspired after watching a youtube video where a guy walked across India. He mentioned several times how he would stop for a chai and it made me think more about the drink.

Of course, we’ve all seen the Starbucks chai drinks, but girl, I’m not about to pay $8 for a coffee when I can make it.

So for my Iced Dirty Chai Latte, I make my own chai concentrate – which is honestly super easy and only takes like half an hour – and then you have enough chai concentrate for a week of drinks!

The perfect afternoon snack to relax and read a book is this dirty chai latte and a cookie like Nutella stuffed cookies, or simple tea cake cookies.

If you loves lattes, try a gingerbread latte, or a hazelnut latte next.

What is a Dirty Chai Latte?

A chai latte is a drink made with chai and steamed milk with a thin layer of foam on top. A Dirty Chai Latte is a chai latte with a shot of espresso added.

An iced dirty chai latte is chai, espresso and frothed milk served over ice. I add a dollop of brown sugar whipped cream to mine and a grating of fresh nutmeg.

Ingredients

About the ingredients for this recipe. See the recipe card below for exact amounts.

Ingredients in clear glass jars for a dirty chai latte labeled with black text.
  • chai concentrate: I use my own recipe which is fantastic. I haven’t tried any store-bought versions.
  • the coffee: I use a double shot of espresso for mine, you could use a single shot if you wanted. You could also use a quarter cup of strongly brewed coffee instead.
  • milk: I like oat milk for mine, you can use whatever milk you prefer.
  • garnish: To garnish this drink I make a brown sugar whipped cream with just brown sugar and whipping cream. I also grate fresh nutmeg on top.

Prep Tips

  • buy or make chai or chai concentrate
  • brew a double shot of espresso (or a single!), or make 1/4 cup of strong coffee

To make an iced dirty chai latte it’s helpful to have everything prepped and ready to go before you brew your espresso. Brewing espresso should be the last thing you do before making the drink. You can use strong brewed coffee instead of espresso.

A clear glass with ice in the bottom.

Add ice to a cup.

Foaming milk with an electric frother.

Froth your choice of milk. I use oat milk and a battery-operated frother to foam mine.

Pouring coffee in a clear cup.

Add 1/2 cup chai concentrate to the glass of ice.

A cup with dark coffee on the bottom.

Add a double shot of espresso or 1/4 cup of strong brewed coffee.

A cup with dark coffee on the bottom and white foamed milk on top.

Pour in the frothed milk, ending with the foam. This will kind of naturally happen as your pour – the foam will scoot back as the milk and frothed milk pours out, followed by the foam.

Grate over some fresh nutmeg if you like it, add a dollop of brown sugar whipped cream, and serve with a straw.

To make brown sugar whipped cream:

Whip together 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream with 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, until you achieve stiff peaks. I use a hand blender for this. You can use a whisk, it’ll just take longer.

RECIPE TIP: Want just an iced chai latte? Skip the coffee!

Equipment

For this recipe, you’ll need something to froth your milk with. I use a hand-held battery-operated frother by Zulay Kitchen. I like it because it’s pretty powerful for a battery-operated handheld frother and the price is reasonable at just $15 in stores or $10 on Amazon. I bought mine at a store called Winners.

If you make a lot of coffee at home and don’t want to invest in an espresso machine, I think a handheld frother is so useful.

I also use a handheld electric whisk to whip my brown sugar whipped cream for this, but that ingredient is optional. You can also whip cream in a bowl with a whisk, it takes longer but works just as well.

Storage

Make this recipe as needed, foamed milk doesn’t stay foamy for long.

Tips + FAQs

What is a dirty chai vs. iced chai?

An iced chai consists of chai or chai concentrate mixed with milk and serve over iced. An iced dirty chai starts with those ingredients but also adds espresso.
