This salt free everything bagel seasoning recipe is simple and quick to put together, making it perfect for beginner cooks. Just toss the ingredients (5 of them!) in a jar and shake.

Homemade seasoning blends are my favorite - they add big flavor to meals with little work.

You know what you're getting with homemade spice blends and this everything bagel seasoning is no different. It's a blend of poppy seeds, black and white sesame seeds, as well as dehydrated garlic and onion flakes.

I don't add salt in my blends so that I can control the amount of flavor I want in a dish without impacting the seasoning. Make this blend salt free and then season as needed.

For example, you can add this flavorful mix to dishes like avocado toast, everything soft pretzels, or salads without worrying about your dish being too salty.

Ingredients

See the recipe card for exact amounts.

  • poppy seeds: These tiny seeds add a subtle nutty flavor and a pleasant crunch.
  • sesame seeds: nutty and crunchy. Black sesame seeds add a bit more color variation to the mix. Toasted sesame seeds add a bolder flavor than untoasted seeds. See the tip below!
  • garlic and onion: use dehydrated garlic and onion (not powder), which you should be able to find in the spice aisle of your grocery store. These offer crunch and concentrated flavor.

Substitutions

  • Sesame seeds: if you can't find black sesame seeds, use all white sesame seeds.

To toast sesame seeds, add the seeds to a dry skillet (no oil!) and heat over medium, tossing or stirring often for 3-5 minutes or until deeply golden brown and fragrant.

Tips for making everything but the bagel seasoning

  • Toasting the sesame enhances their flavor and add an extra layer of nuttiness to your blend.
  • Feel free to adjust the ratios of the ingredients according to your preferences. If you're not a big garlic fan, use a bit less.

What to use everything bagel seasoning on

I use this mix in my everything bagel soft pretzels for added flavor and crunch. Try sprinkling it on air fryer croutons, avocado toast, roasted vegetables, or in cucumber salad.
