Brown sugar simple syrup is an easy homemade sweetener for coffee and cocktails. Made with just brown sugar and water, it has a warm, caramel-like flavor that adds more depth than regular simple syrup.

How to Use Brown Sugar Simple Syrup

Simple syrup works better than granulated sugar in cold drinks because the sugar is already dissolved, so it mixes evenly instead of settling at the bottom of your glass. It also makes it easy to sweeten drinks without adding extra liquid and diluting your drink or measuring sugar separately.

My original simple syrup recipe uses white sugar for a syrup that is great in coffee drinks, cocktails, and drinks like lemonade where you want to sweeten but not add flavor. For flavored syrups, try gingerbread syrup or marshmallow syrup.

Use this homemade syrup to sweeten iced coffee, lattes, and shaken espresso drinks. It also works well in cocktails or other cold drinks.

Start with a tablespoon per drink and adjust the amount to taste.

Ingredients

See the recipe card for exact amounts.

  • Brown sugar: Gives the syrup its rich sweetness and light molasses flavor. Light brown sugar has a milder flavor, while dark brown sugar tastes richer. I use dark brown sugar.
  • Water: An equal amount of water to sugar makes a smooth syrup that mixes easily into hot and cold drinks.
