This easy homemade Maple Chipotle BBQ Sauce is sweet, smoky, and has just the right kick from chipotle peppers and maple whisky. Perfect for brushing on grilled chicken, ribs, or veggies — ready in about 30 minutes with simple pantry ingredients.
In a large bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce, water, vinegar, brown sugar, maple syrup, Worcestershire sauce, maple whisky, liquid smoke, black pepper, smoked paprika, and chopped chipotle pepper. Set aside.
Heat a bit of oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook the onion for 6–8 minutes until soft and lightly golden.
Add the garlic and cook it for about 30 seconds or so, just until fragrant but be careful not to burn it.
Pour in the pre-mixed sauce. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20–30 minutes, stirring often, until thickened.
Cool completely, then blend if you want it smooth.
Notes
Makes about 3 cups of sauce. When simmering the sauce, be sure to keep the heat low and stir frequently to prevent scorching and ensure a smooth, thick consistency.Taste the sauce as it simmers and adjust the salt, pepper, and sweetness to your preference.Let the sauce cool completely before storing.Because this sauce uses fresh onion and garlic instead of powder, the end result will be as chunky as you've cut your onions. You can leave it like this, and I often do. For a smoother sauce, blend the cooled sauce before using.Omit the whisky if you prefer not to cook with alcohol.
