Ingredients

Honey Bourbon Sauce

  • cup diced onions
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • ½ cup bourbon
  • 1 ½ cup water
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 3 teaspoons sambal oelek or sriracha or ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes

Meatballs

  • 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup fresh bread crumbs*
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F.

Meatballs

  • Mix together all of the meatball ingredients. Scoop meatballs in 1 ½ tablespoons sized portions onto a lined baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes or until cooked through.

Honey Bourbon Sauce

  • Make the sauce. Heat a frying pan over medium heat. Add oil and onions and cook for about 5 minutes or until softened. Add garlic and cook another minute. In a bowl, mix together the water, honey, vinegar, molasses, and sambal oelek.
  • Carefully add the bourbon to the pan. Cook for a minute or 2. Add the water mixture. Bring to a boil and then cook over medium-high, whisking occasionally, for about 15 minutes or until thickened to your preferred consistency.
  • Serve the sauce spooned over the top of the meatballs, or toss cooked meatballs into the pan of sauce and toss to coat.

Notes

  1. I made fresh bread crumbs - I used a food processor to blend up fresh bread, not dry bread crumbs.  I like to do this for meatballs to give them moisture.
